Our Ethos, Approach & Policies

Here you can learn more about our values, how we support children’s learning and development, and the policies that underpin our practice. This page explains our child-led approach, partnership with parents, commitment to inclusion, and how we keep children safe.

Our Ethos

At our nursery, we believe every child is unique, capable and full of potential. Our ethos is rooted in a child-led, in-the-moment approach, where children’s interests, ideas and curiosity shape their learning experiences each day.

We focus on the “whole child”, supporting children’s emotional wellbeing, confidence, communication and independence alongside their learning and development.

We value childhood as a time to explore, play, question and grow at each child’s own pace.

Building Cultural Capital

We are committed to giving children experiences they may not otherwise have access to, helping to build their cultural capital and understanding of the wider world.

Through stories, outings, visitors, celebrations, hands-on activities and real-life experiences, we help children:

  • Broaden their horizons

  • Develop curiosity about the world around them

  • Build knowledge that supports future learning

Our Weekly Focus Child

Each week, we identify a Focus Child to ensure every child receives individual attention and tailored support.

This allows practitioners to:

  • Observe children closely

  • Plan experiences linked to their interests and needs

  • Strengthen relationships with children and families

The Focus Child approach ensures no child is overlooked and that learning is meaningful and personalised.

Child-Led & In-the-Moment Learning

Learning in our nursery is led by the child, not just planned by adults. Practitioners carefully observe children’s interests and respond in the moment, extending learning through meaningful play, conversation and experiences.

This approach allows children to:

  • Feel listened to and valued

  • Build confidence and independence

  • Develop a genuine love of learning

While we plan thoughtfully, we remain flexible so learning stays relevant, engaging and purposeful for every child.

Partnership with Parents

We believe parents are a child’s first and most important educators. We work in close partnership with families and value their knowledge, views and contributions.

Parents are encouraged to:

  • Share children’s interests and experiences from home

  • Be involved in day-to-day planning and learning

  • Communicate openly with staff

This strong partnership helps ensure consistency, reassurance and the best outcomes for every child.

Keeping You Informed

We regularly update parents with photos and observations to share children’s learning, achievements and special moments. This helps parents feel connected to their child’s nursery day and supports learning at home.

Inclusion, SEN & EAL

We are an inclusive nursery and warmly welcome children of all backgrounds, cultures and languages.

We:

  • Support children with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

  • Support children with English as an Additional Language (EAL)

  • Work closely with parents and external professionals where needed

Every child is respected, valued and supported to reach their full potential.

Policies & Procedures

We have clear policies and procedures in place to ensure best practice and transparency, including:

  • Admissions Policy

  • Safeguarding Policy

  • Complaints Policy (including Ofsted complaints procedure)

  • Active, engaged learning
